Worm Watch Lab Talk

Many videos - no eggs

  • GregorS by GregorS

I have watched at least 30 videos without seeing a worm lay an egg (a few with eggs previousl lain) Is this expected? if so the instructions should indcate what fraction of videos contain egg-laying behavior (and maybe if the percentage is low <15%) a video with an egg-laying sequence be inserted at random just to keep the observers on their toes and "happy". As an observer I suspect that a sequence without an instance of egg laying could be as informative as an instance with an egg laying one; yet I do long for the oportunity to press that Z key!

It depends on the genotype of the worm; wild-type worms lay about 10-20 eggs per hour. But events are somewhat clustered, so some movies will contain multiple eggs and many will have none.
